the longest summer

the longest summer

after the party was over
and the lights are out
our masks were removed
walls breached
battle plans drawn
everyone prepared for their part

we wanted to travel the seven seas
fight dragons, build castles
we found a home
and made it a home
just for our summer
spoke forever underneath the sky
we slept in the sand and
lived with the shore

we were deep, we were meaningful
we were trite, we were trivial
we were everything we could be

even after the golden threads of our bond have dimmed
we will always have that longest summer
the time of our lives
our souls burned
our minds changed
we grew up, finally
while counting the stars
